# Santa's Side Quests

**Status:** In Development

## Overview
Optional puzzle challenge game designed for gamer/puzzle enthusiast guests. 8 location-based puzzles hidden throughout venue that require problem-solving, pattern recognition, ciphers, and logic. Guests complete quest card and return to Quest Master for verification and prize. Estimated time: 20-30 minutes.

Geeky board/card gamers, puzzle enthusiasts, achievement hunters, adults and teens who enjoy challenge-based gameplay

## Game Mechanics

**Introduction:**
- Game Master mentions during dinner as optional challenge
- Quest cards available at Game Master table
- Framing: "Adventurers helping Santa solve problems before Christmas Eve"

**Gameplay:**
- Self-guided exploration - guests visit 8 locations
- Each location has puzzle signage/materials
- Solve puzzle, write answer on quest card
- Zero staff required during gameplay

**Completion:**
- Return completed quest card to Game Master
- Game Master verifies all 8 answers
- All correct = award prize
- Flexible on partial credit (6-7 out of 8)

## The 8 Quests

1. **"The Inventor's Calculation"** (Inventor's Workshop) - Count bottles × 3 gears. Answer: TBD (depends on bottle count)
2. **"Decipher the Tracking Code"** (The Peppermint Powerplant) - Symbol math puzzle using emoji substitution. Answer: 7
3. **"Translate the Elvish Script"** (Celestial Hall) - Symbol cipher with key. Decode message. Answer: "Cookies Are Life"
4. **"Crack the Postal Cipher"** (Inventor's Workshop) - Caesar cipher (shift back 1). Answer: "Santa"
5. **"Chart the Christmas Star"** (The Old Map Room) - Grid coordinate navigation using star chart. Answer: "Ursa Minor" (or constellation at position F6)
6. **"The Inspector's Secret"** (The Elves' Pantry) - Find 3 hidden snowflakes, identify color of 3rd one. Answer: Silver (or chosen color)
7. **"The Ornament Pattern"** (Celestial Hall) - Identify next in sequence on tree row. Answer: Silver (Red→Gold→Silver pattern)
8. **"The Christmas Calculation"** (The Elf Toy Co.) - Multi-step math using room decoration counts. Answer: Varies (example: 12)

## Materials & Budget

**Quest Cards:**
- 50-100 printed quest cards (letter-size, single-sided)
- Dark fantasy/RPG aesthetic design
- Cost: $10-20

**Puzzle Signage (8 locations):**
- Quest 1: Riddle poster (11×17")
- Quest 2: Symbol math sign (11×17")
- Quest 3: Elvish cipher poster + encrypted message (2 posters, 11×17")
- Quest 4: Chalkboard message or printed sign
- Quest 5: Star chart poster with grid (24×36" or larger)
- Quest 6: 3 hidden snowflake symbols (stickers/small decorations)
- Quest 7: Ornament pattern on tree (uses existing ornaments)
- Quest 8: Math challenge sign (11×17")
- Cost: $40-80 (printing, mounting)

**Prizes:**
- Completion reward (badges, pins, small items)
- 20-30 prizes expected (not all guests will attempt)
- Cost: $20-60

**Design Philosophy:**
- Puzzles use room decorations/props (not separate game stations)
- Self-contained (no staff interaction needed during gameplay)
- Difficulty: Medium-Hard (designed for puzzle enthusiasts)
- Rewards cleverness and observation skills
- Optional (doesn't interrupt other activities)

- `operations-guide.html` - Complete Game Master reference with all puzzles, answers, setup instructions
